Hello from across the pond
« on: March 11, 2007, 08:32:22 PM »
:) Hello, I am Nelson from North Carolina. We have a blue  Cane Corso named Boris. He will be 5 months old at end of this month (March). We had E. Mastiffs before and lost our last one last Summer. She was 3 mths shy of 12 yrs old.We love Mastiffs but did not want another 90 kg dog  as the weight seems to be a burdem as they age.We considered Boerbel, and Amer.Blldog (Johnson type) and decided on Cane Corso as they are beautiful and big, yet still athletic.  I love Molloser type dogs and Boris is heavily boned and muscled. He has already made buddies with our 2 Jack Russell Terriers (Parson Russell) Pee-Wee and Rudy. We live in Foothills of Western North Carolina on farm and have Mules and Donkeys also. We hope to teach Boris to swim as our female Mastiff loved it and we think that is why she lived almost 12 years.  Do Cane Corsos generally like to swim? (A big pond is on property so it is handy). I guess he will be on larger end of scale as he is 25 kg now. He is much much more athletic and faster than our E. Matiffs at same age or wieght. He is well proportioned and not overweight, has had all his immunizations and we are socializing him as much as we can. Glad I found your site, as I know little about this breed, only from reading.  I am sure to have more questions. I am working with him with obedience, and he seems to be smart, and of course seems to want to put everything in his mouth and loves to eat dirt. Hello to All. :)   (Oh, one reason we got Cane Corso is I stay away from home one night a week and my wife feels safer with a big dog in house, I understand they are good guardians of the home.

Hi Nelson, welcome to the board.   Corsi like all dog breeds love to swim, just show him the water.   They are very smart and easy to train, it will be up to you to keep finding new things to train him in and he will learn faster then you can teach.  Have fun!

Thanks for the welcome. Stephanie, we are about an hour East of Ashville, near Hickory, you must be near Johnson City. Irena, I am work now but will try to post some pics tomorrow of Boris, I'm not that great at uploading or posting photos though, but will give it a try.

Welcome aboard Nelson, :)
I too am a first time Corso owner, this place has a lot of knowledegable people that are very willing to share.
I got a Corso on the same basis as you did, I wanted a big dog ,but not to big, I also am away a night or two during the week and like the sense of security for my wife.
As stated above the dog is very smart and a very fast learner, our girl is 9 months now and is just fantastic we went through puppy kindergarten and beginners Obedience,  half way through beginners obedience we went to a working Corso event and they offered the CGC testing and our girl as well as two of her litter mates passed at 8 months old. Our instructor at OB class was very impressed as the Advanced Beginners class was supposed to be a prelim for the CGC test and we passed before basic was complete. Of course we put a lot of time iinto the dog as well but she did learn fast.
Enjoy your new pup Look forward to seeing some pics  :)
