Let me introduce myself

Hey everyone.  I'm Gina from SC.  I have an 8 month old female Corso, Akiva and I also have an 8 month old female Boston Terrier.  They are wonderful, when they sleep....LOL.  They are great dogs, and I love them, but they are driving me crazy too.  I need to know how to keep my corso from jumping on my kids and guests.  She respects me, but she completely ignores my husband and kids.  Any help would be great.  Thanks for letting me join and I hope to gain some useful information from the veterans with corsos.

Hi Gina, my name is Clare and I am new to Corsos too.  They're jumping so high is an amazement to me.  So far my year and a half year old boy Brutus srtarted doing the same thing, but if I say in a very stern voice OFF he gets off.  I don't really know much about this breed, but have had dogs all my life and volunteer at an animal hospital and know one thing consistency, but other people sometimes like it and don't realize you don't want them jumping up.  They could hurt someone,especially kids.

Well we can learn a lot from this forum .  The first thing I have to figure out is how to get a picture on here. And why when I hit a smiley face it doesn't come up like in a IM LOL

Have you had your pup through puppy classes or any type of obedience classes?
That sure will help...especially with this breed, they need it as well as the owner.

I believe she is calling for attention, a cheap trick and very common during this age. When she flops, fails to get attention this will be her worst punishment believe me.But who resist to a dog siege? If you can not resist you will pass the rest of her life yelling to, cause the dog learned that jumping is the best manner to get your attention, so when you yell or modify your voice you are giving unconsciously attention to her.I use this trick: when she jumps hold firmly her front paws .When she feels bother, start to walk into the dog direction(maintain the front paws up) imposing the dog to walk back(like reverse).It is very important that you DO NOT LOOK at her or SAY nothing since you hold her paws. To finish this trick, let her drop to the floor and say : "Floor"or anything short that make sense to you when she reachs it .When she will be by 4 paws in the floor, incite her to jump over you again and repeat the exercise again and again. I believe shortely no more jumps. Don't forget to reward her with a big affection when you incite her to jump and she doesnt anymore.

Hello and welcome Gina,

Whenever I've had issues with dogs jumping up..... I have the people around the dog lift up their knee just has he goes to launch, and say a FIRM down.  This way he's kneed himself on the person, without them having anything to do with it, and its shown him its an unpleasant game to play........  The dog will associate jumping up with a sore chest or belly, and he'll wonder why for a little bit, then stop doing it.....  Its worked every time for me, and it doesn't make the people seem like the 'bad guy' to the dog for scolding..... It's just not as fun as it used to be..

Welcome!  Yea, the jumping.  Add in a young dog that likes to wrestle, and everyone is a possible target.  Sometimes the knee into the chest is taken as an invitation to play.  I have a friend who is not very steady on his feet and he has an old GSD trick that seems to have worked for Ralphie (at least when he is around Tom on a regular basis).  When Ralphie jumps, Tom moves forward and 'accidently' steps on Ralphie's back feet.  All along giving the big "O - I'm so sorry!".  Ralphie figures that Tom is not so fun to jump on and will back off when someone else moves a step or two forward if he starts to launch. So if you can get at least one person (besides you) to step on the back feet enough to sensatize her, all someone else might have to do is move forward and problem may be solved.

OH and I will also add that Tom thought it was cute when Ralphie jumped on him when Ralphie was just a little squirt.  So he asked for it.  99.99% of the population just don't get it when you remind them that the cute little baby puppy is a MASTIFF and it will grow QUICKLY into a BIG dog.  A BIG dog that remembers (no matter how long ago it was) that you used to like it when he jumped on you.  (And no matter how big a GSD is, Tom was not ready for what was in store for him months down the line.)
