hello from Italy and some questions? :-)
« on: January 08, 2012, 02:12:38 PM »
Ciao,
I live in Italy and I want to take a cane corso (I prefer now a female cane corso and then also to take a male... I have just a german shepherd 5 years old).
I have two childrens (11 and 8 years) and I'm  a little afraid. What is the character and personality  of cane corso (female, male and couple of them) with childrens. Is the cane corso a dog with patience? Can cane corso (alone or in couple with female cane corso)  be dangerous with family's members and expecially with childrens.
Can someone describe his experience with cane corso and childrens.
A my friend told me that once his cane corso has bite his little children because dog tried to be dominant. Someone can tell something about this?
Some advices would be well accept.  :) :)
Perhaps isn't the right post to ask, but I like the your answear.
thanks a lot
Phil

If you take a young puppy, from 2 confident stable charactered parents and let the puppy grow up in the house with the children, I don't see a problem at all. You must make sure the puppy gets his own place where he can rest and where the children are NOT allowed to come. A dog sleeps a lot and sometimes children can be very annoying if they want to play with the dog, while the dog wants to sleep. A dog can do only 2 things to make clear that he doesnt want something. He can growl and if that does not have the wanted effect (the children leaving him alone) the other option is a bite. So this own place for the dog where the children never ever bother him, is very important. Also you should never leave children alone with a dog. That goes for all breeds, not only Cane Corso. I find the Cane Corso a great family member who is great with children. It is important that the children know how to behave with a dog.

I think they can make great family dogs... but just like any big dog they need training... sounds like your kids have grown up with big dogs... half the battle....yes this breed needs to know who the alpha is in the house, and have rules and limits... I've found that a well socialized dog is a dog with a  good demeanor. Also females can be less dominant... sometimes ... ditto on meeting the parents and interacting with them...
They are much like many large breed dogs... just a little smarter... and prettier... and  :)...opps I'm a bit bias

Patience... too much at times... once through that puppy stage they are true old souls...

train... train... train... socialize ... socialize... socialize
